ISLAMABAD/SINGAPORE: Employees at Twitter Inc’s Singapore office have been told to vacate their desks and the premises.

People familiar with the development said that the move was part of new CEO Elon Musk’s policy to cut expenses by firing the staff across the globe.

Twitter staff informed via email

Twitter staff were informed via email on Wednesday to leave the CapitaGreen building until 5 pm and resume their duties remotely from Thursday until further notice, one of the people said on the condition of anonymity, according to Bloomberg.

Representatives for Twitter have not yet commented on the matter.

Singapore serves as the Asia-Pacific headquarters for the San Francisco-based firm. The region suffered severe and abrupt job cuts when new CEO Musk took over Twitter. This month, the company also let go of Nur Azhar Bin Ayob, who was the head of site integrity for the region and a relatively new hire.

Twitter emptied Singapore office over nonpayment of rent: reports

Casey Newton of Platformer, first tweeted on the matter, saying that the reason for the Singapore office clearout was non-payment of rent.

However, a spokesperson for CapitaLand, the owner of its Singapore offices, said Twitter is still a tenant at CapitaGreen without explaining further, reported Bloomberg.

Musk’s efforts to pare costs have included not paying rent on its global headquarters. Twitter was sued over this issue last month by the owner of its San Francisco offices.
