Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Interior has directed the deployment of Frontier Constabulary (FC) to guard sensitive polling stations during the second phase of local government elections in Sindh.

On Saturday, the interior ministry directed the deployment of FC troops at sensitive polling stations during polling, which is due to be held tomorrow (Sunday).

Sindh LG Polls scheduled for tomorrow

The interior ministry decided on a request by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) asking for the deployment of FC personnel at polling stations during local government elections.

The ministry said the ministry would mutually decide the date and areas for troops deployment by the Sindh government, FC high-ups, and ECP.

Earlier Wednesday, the General Headquarters (GHQ) had declined to deploy Rangers and Army personnel at polling stations for Sindh LG polls.

The federal government had informed ECP about the GHQ response.

In a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), the Interior Ministry had said that deployment of 20,000 personnel of Rangers and Army was sought at sensitive polling stations but the GHQ had conveyed that they could not spare personnel for polling duty.

The interior ministry in the letter had further stated that the Rangers and Army would be deployed only as a quick response force.
