KARACHI: Unidentified people set ablaze seven election camps of different political parties during the ongoing local government (LG) elections in different areas of the provincial capital on the polling day Sunday.

The Korangi SSP said the investigation was underway to determine the elements behind the incident.

Saud Abad camp was the first target

Police said the first incident was reported in the Saud Abad area where the fire was brought under control in no time. The suspects fled the scene. The camps were set on fire in Korangi and Malir areas. Rangers and police were present at the affected camps, according to media reports.

It may be mentioned here noted that polling for the second phase of LG polls in Sindh kicked off in Karachi and Hyderabad divisions on Sunday morning with over 3.4m people exercising their right to vote to elect local governments.

According to the police, the fire broke out near the Boys Secondary School polling camp in Saud Abad but was brought under control in no time. The suspects fled the scene, according to media reports. Police officials said the investigation is underway to determine the cause and persons behind the incident, as initially, it looks like someone lit up the fire to save themselves from cold.

The polling is taking place in nine districts of the Hyderabad division and seven districts of Karachi. Strict security measures are in place to ensure fair and transparent polling in both the divisions. Meanwhile, it has been reported from various parts of Karachi and Hyderabad that polling staff arrived late at the designated stations.
