MOSCOW: Russia has produced the first nuclear warheads for the Poseidon super torpedoes for deployment on the Belgorod nuclear submarine, TASS news agency reported on Monday, citing an anonymous defense source.
“The first Poseidon ammunition loads have been produced, and the Belgorod submarine will receive them very soon,” TASS news agency quoted the source as saying.
Russian President Vladimir Putin first announced what would become known as Poseidon in 2018. He said it was a fundamentally new type of strategic nuclear weapon with its own source of nuclear power.
Poseidon super torpedo with unlimited range
In a 2018 speech, Putin said the torpedo range would be unlimited and that it could operate at extreme depths at a speed several times that of other torpedoes or any submarine.
“They are low noise, have high manoeuvrability, and are practically indestructible for the enemy. No weapon can counter them in the world today,” Putin said.
