ISLAMABAD/WASHINGTON: T-Mobile, a US telecom company said on Thursday that a recent hack impacted 37 million customers’ data.

According to the AFP, in a filing with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, the company said that it realized on January 5 that a “bad actor” had infiltrated its computer system and siphoned off data without authorization.

The company said that after identifying the source of a hack, it was fixed within 24 hours, and also added that it believes the rest of its system was not affected.

The telecom company later determined that the attack likely began around 25 November 2022.

The hacked information includes T-Mobile customers’ email, names, addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, and account numbers.

T-Mobile point of view

The company said it does not include bank and social security card numbers, tax information, or passwords. The Deutsche Telekom-owned company said that Customer accounts and finances were not put at high risk directly by this event.

It added that affected customers could be notified, and an internal investigation is still underway.

T-Mobile said that “We may incur important expenses in connection with this incident,”.

The fresh hack comes after another episode in 2021 affected the data of 76.6 million American people.

The company agreed to the previous summer to pay 350 million dollars to settle lawsuits filed by the plaintiffs in a class action suit and to spend 150 million dollars on data protection and cybersecurity in 2022 and 2023.
