ISLAMABAD/MEXICO CITY: The police Monday said that Eight citizens died and five were wounded in a shooting at a busy nightclub/bar in the town of Jerez, in northern Mexico.

According to the AFP, the Security Secretariat said that the incident in Zacatecas state took place on Friday into Saturday when the heavily armed persons, arriving at the bar in two cars, burst in and began shooting indiscriminately.

Six citizens died in the bar

Six citizens died on the spot and two more succumbed while receiving medical attention; five citizens remained hospitalized for gunshot wounds.

Victims included club employees, customers, musicians and local media said. Witnesses said citizens panicked as the club’s floor became awash in blood.

The city bar, called “El Venadito,” is in the center of Jerez, a municipality about 60 kilometers southwest of the state capital city of Zacatecas.

Jerez has been hit in recent years by a wave of violence that the previous year forced hundreds of residents of nearby rural communities to leave their houses.

Zacatecas state is the strategic point for the United States-bound drug trade, which has sparked violent disputes between the Jalisco New Generation and Sinaloa cartels, Mexico’s most powerful.
