DAMASCUS: A baby girl has been rescued from the wreckage of her home in northern Syria after Monday’s massive earthquake, media reported on Tuesday.

The recovered baby’s umbilical cord was still attached to her mother when she was found, a relative told AFP. Media reports said that the baby’s mother is believed to have passed away after giving birth. Khalil al-Suwadi told the media that they heard a voice when they were digging.
Al-Suwadi added that they found the baby the umbilical cord (intact) when they cleared the dust. Khalil al-Suwadi maintained that they cut the umbilical cord and took the baby to the hospital.

Many survivors are still being recovered from the debris in Turkey and Syria, where a magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred early on Monday morning. Rescue operations have been complicated by cold, blocked roads, destroyed infrastructure and several aftershocks.
About 4 million people in northern part of Syria were already displaced and depending on humanitarian assistance due to civil war, James Elder, spokesman for UNICEF said.
