ISLAMABAD: A district and session judge in Islamabad on Thursday rejected the post-arrest bail plea of former interior minister and Awami Muslim League (AML) head Sheikh Rashid Ahmed in the case of levelling allegations against former president Asif Ali Zardari.

Judicial magistrate also rejected Rashid’s plea

Additional Session Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra heard the case. Days back, judicial magistrate Umar Shabbir had also rejected Rashid’s plea for post-arrest bail.

The AML chief is facing charges of levelling murder plot allegations against Pakistan Peoples Party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, threatening police and passing “filthy” comments against Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, in multiple cities.

Sheikh Rashid is currently in the custody of Murree Police on a transitory remand in the case related to threatening police officials. His lawyers had filed a new plea seeking the bail in the sessions court, following the rejection by a judicial magistrate. However, the sessions court judge, Tahir Mehmood, forwarded the plea to an additional sessions court.

It may be mentioned that Sheikh Rashid Ahmed (72), was detained last week from his residence on a complaint filed by the PPP Rawalpindi Division vice-president. He is being tried under several sections related to criminal conspiracy, promoting enmity between different groups, and statements conducing to public mischief.
