ISLAMABAD: Two Islamabad courts on Tuesday accepted bail pleas of former prime minsiter and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan in two different cases.

Judge Rakhshinda Shaheen of the Banking Court accepted Khan’s bail plea in a case relating to the prohibited funding, while Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) judge Raja Jawad accepted the PTI chief’s interim bail plea in a case pertaining to a protest outside the Election Commission of Pakistan following its decision in the Tosha Khana case.

Prohibited funding case

The banking court had summoned Khan on February 28. The former PM has been seeking bail in the case filed against him and other party leaders by the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) Commercial banking Circle under the Foreign Exchange Act. The case was filed after Khan and other party members were accused of being the beneficiaries of suspicious bank accounts. The FIA claimed that Abraaj Group transferred $2.1 million to PTI’s bank accounts.

In accordance with the Foreign Exchange Act, a case of prohibited funding against the former PM and other party leaders was listened earlier today at the banking court.

The FIA had in October 2022 charged Imran and other PTI key leaders in relation with their party allegedly getting illegal funding. The case was sent by the state through FIA’s Corporate Banking Circle in Islamabad baranch.

In September last year, the ECP had announced its decesion in the illegal funding case — previously known as the foreign funding case — against the PTI, which said that the party did indeed receive prohibited funding.

Anti-terror case

The ATC had earlier rejected his bail plea over non-appearance while maintaining that the PTI chief must appear in person to file the plea.

The terror case was filed against the former PM in October 2022 when PTI workers and supporters took to the streets and held country-wide demonstrations outside ECP offices after it disqualified the former prime minister in the Toshakhana reference. Meanwhile, clashes were also reported between the police and protesters in Islamabad, Peshawar, Karachi, and other areas.
