Erdogan Says President Putin May Visit Ankara for Nuclear Power Plant Inauguration

ANKARA: Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin may visit Ankara on April 27 to inaugurate the country’s first nuclear power plant jointly constructed with Russia’s nuclear energy company Rosatom.

“Putin may come to Turkey on April 27 for the inauguration ceremony. Or we may attend the ceremony online,” Turkish President Erdogan said on Wednesday that President Putin may visit Turkey on April 27 or attend the ceremony virtually. He hoped that they will take the 1st step. Erdogan maintained that the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant is one of Turkey’s “crucial investments,” saying that the capacity would help the country “extremely stock energy.”

According to TRT, Akkuyu, presently under construction in Turkey’s Mersin province, will be the first nuclear power plant in the country. The plant’s first reactor will be operational by 2023, with the entire plant to be up and running by 2025. The plant began with a 2010 intergovernmental deal between Ankara and Moscow. TRT further said that the plant, expected to have a fitted capacity of 4,800 MW and 4 reactors, is set to start producing power later in the current year.
