WASHINGTON: Top Republicans on Thursday denounced former US president Donald Trump’s indictment as a politically motivated effort to derail his 2024 White House bid.  Kevin McCarthy, the top Republican in the House of Representatives, and others criticized Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who pushed the criminal probe against Donald Trump.

Kevin McCarthy said that Alvin Bragg has irreparably spoiled their country in an attempt to interfere in the Presidential election. He said Bragg weaponized their sacred justice system against former President Donald Trump. He added that the people of the US will not tolerate this injustice, and the House of Representatives will also hold Bragg and his unprecedented abuse of power to fix.

The governor of Florida Ron DeSantis, seen as Donald Trump’s main rival for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, termed the indictment of the former President “un-American.”

The governor accused Bragg of “extending the law to target a political rival.”

Representative Elise Stefanik denounced the indictment of Trump as “unprecedented election meddling” and a “political witch-hunt.”

A New York grand panel indicted Trump on Thursday over hush money payments, making him the first-ever former or serving president to face criminal charges in US history.

Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen told Congress in 2019 that he had made the payment on Trump’s behalf and was later compensated. However, prosecutors said the checks were not correctly listed, and the panel was asked to contemplate if the suspicious accounting was part of a cover-up, intended to help Trump’s elections drive by burying the outrage.
