Pakistan’s Public Debt Increases by 27.1% in One Year

ISLAMABAD: The total public debt of the federal government of Pakistan decreased by 589 billion rupees or 1.1% from 54.9 trillion rupees in January 2023 to 54.354 trillion rupees in February.

On a Year-on-Year (YoY) basis, the debt increased to 54.354 trillion rupees in February 2023 from 42.761 trillion rupees in February 2022, a surge of 11.593 trillion rupees or 27.1%, according to the monthly data released by the State Bank of Pakistan.

The data reveals that the domestic debt of the central government surged by 23% YoY from 27.705 trillion rupees in February 2022 to 34.072 trillion rupees this Year.

Out of total domestic debt, the long-term public debt surged from 22.141 trillion rupees to 27.731 trillion rupees, while the short-term debt increased from 5.524 trillion rupees to 6.295 trillion rupees during the last Year.

Long term debt

Out of the total long-term debt, the government increased 23.837 trillion rupees in debt through Federal Government Bonds during the previous Year. Meanwhile, debt surged through prize bonds was 381 billion rupees in February 2023, compared to 373 billion rupees last Year.

The unfunded debt went down to 3.024 trillion rupees from 3.614 trillion rupees. Foreign currency loans jumped to 11 billion rupees from 8 billion rupees.
