ISLAMABAD: OpenAI, the firm behind renowned AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT, announced on Tuesday that it would offer up to $20,000 to users who report vulnerabilities in its artificial intelligence systems.

OpenAI Bug Bounty program, which was launched on Tuesday, will offer rewards, starting from $200 per vulnerability, to people based on the severity of the bugs they report.

Bug bounty programs are often used by technology companies to encourage programmers and ethical hackers to report risks in their software systems.

According to details on bug bounty platform Bugcrow1d, OpenAI has invited researchers to study certain functionality of ChatGPT and the framework of how its systems communicate and share data with third-party applications.

Incorrect or malicious content produced by OpenAI systems are not part of the program.

The move comes days after Italy banned ChatGPT for a suspected breach of privacy rules due to the way it handles data and a lack of controls in place for minors.

The ban prompted regulators in other European countries to study generative AI services more closely.

Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s ChatGPT took the world by storm since its launch in November. The automated chat service has astonished users worldwide with quick responses to questions while also caused distress for others with inaccuracies.
