BEIJING: China has said that Beijing is opposed to a G20 meeting next week in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and will not attend it, Western media reported on Friday.

According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin, “Beijing is firmly opposed to organizing any kind of G20 meetings in the disputed territory and will not take part in such meetings,”.

The relations between India and China have been strained since a military clash in Ladakh in 2020 in which 24 troops were killed. Pakistan has also strongly opposed New Delhi’s decision to hold a G20 meeting in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). As per media reports, Srinagar, the summer capital of IIOJK, will host a meeting of G20 on May 22-24.

Earlier, media reported that China and Turkey would not attend the controversial G20 meeting in IIOJK in a move that would be seen as a diplomatic victory for Islamabad, which is strongly opposing Indian attempts to depict the normalcy in the disputed territory.

Human Rights activists said “enormous human rights violations” have been reported in IIOJK since it came under India’s direct rule. “These violations included torture, denial of political participation rights of Kashmiri Muslims and minorities and extrajudicial killings,” they said.
