SAN FRANCISCO: Microsoft Corp co-founder Bill Gates said on Monday that creating the top artificial intelligence agent, which is key to winning the technological race, has the potential to upend search engines, productivity and online shopping platforms.

“You will never visit a search engine again,” he predicted, adding, “You won’t ever shop on Amazon.”

Speaking at AI Forward 2023, an event in San Francisco hosted by Goldman Sachs Group Inc and SV Angel, Bill Gates said that he would be disappointed if Microsoft were not a contender (in this race), though there was a 50 per cent probability that a startup will emerge as the leading contender.

Amazon.com Inc, Google and Microsoft did not instantly respond to requests for comment from Reuters.

Gates said Inflection AI —a machine learning startup that engages in redefining human-computer interaction— and co-founded by entrepreneur Reid Hoffman, impressed him.

Various industry players have worked on building AI-powered computer assistant, which consumers could command by speech or text to handle a plethora of tasks for them.

“Whoever wins the personal agent, that is a big thing,” Gates said.
