MALTON: A great number of more than 42,000 Canadian Sikhs gathered at the Khalistan Referendum voting center in Malton, Ontario, following the assassination of prominent pro-Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

The Canada Khalistan Referendum’s second phase of voting was held within a month after the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar outside a local temple.

Narendra Modi’s regime in India had claimed the killing would dampen the spirit of pro-Khalistani Sikhs, but Sunday’s turnout in Malton revealed that they remain undeterred by the high-profile assassination of Nijjar.

Khalistan Referendum Centre Dedicated to Mohinder Singh Khalsa

On 16 July, Khalistan Referendum Centre (KRC) at Gurdwara Malton was dedicated to Mohinder Singh Khalsa, a Canadian national who left the country to fight for the cause of Khalistan in the 1990s. Sikhs who participated in the event were carrying flags and banners with slogans of Khalistan, demands of freedom from India and tributes to those Sikh nationals who have been assassinated by India directly or indirectly for supporting the Khalistan cause.

The participants chanted slogans vowing to avenge the killing of Nijjar and others who killed Khalistanis.

The voting was arranged by Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) under the supervision of the independent Punjab Referendum Commission.

SFJ’s General Counsel Gurpatwant Singh Pannun said that the assassination of Nijjar by India worked as a catalyst for the Khalistan campaign. Thousands gathered in the Toronto Referendum, challenging the Modi regime’s attempts to stop the movement.
