NEW DELHI: Concerns have been raised over potential damage to the iconic Taj Mahal in Agra, India, as the Yamuna River, which runs through the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, has risen to lap the compound walls of the 17th-century white marble monument.

The increased water level in the Yamuna is a result of unusually heavy rain in northern India, including Uttar Pradesh. Floodwaters from the river have reached the walls of the Taj Mahal as water levels in the river cross 150 meters – the highest since 1978.
