ANTAKYA: The Dumans, a family business in Antakya, Turkey, known for producing cruelty-free “peace silk” using traditional methods, faced a major setback when a deadly earthquake struck the region in February 2023. The earthquake interrupted their silk weaving business, and the family dedicated months to helping those worst-affected by the disaster. However, with the support of encouraging calls from well-wishers, the Dumans recently managed to get back on their feet and resume their cherished day job of weaving rare silk.

The Dumans’ cruelty-free “peace silk” has been a source of pride for their hometown, but the earthquake’s impact left them focusing on humanitarian efforts. After assisting the earthquake victims, the family was motivated by the support they received from people wanting them to continue their silk weaving tradition. Emel Duman expressed gratitude for the encouraging calls and has now restarted their weaving operations, bringing back hope and tradition to their family business in Antakya. – AFP
