Trump Legal Team Asks to Delay Court Hearing in 2020 Election Case

US Special Counsel Jack Smith’s team and Trump’s lawyers clashed in a joint court filing over a hearing date before US District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan to debate the treatment of evidence. The former President’s legal team asked for a delay until next week while the prosecutors said they were available for the case.

Earlier, On Monday, Trump’s defence team also opposed a plea from prosecutors for Chutkan to implement a protective order in order to ensure confidential evidence is not shared publicly by the ex-President, saying he could utilize the information to threaten witnesses.

Trump’s legal team said limits would overstep on his right to free speech as per the constitution of the US.

Judge Tanya Chutkan asked both parties to propose a date for this week to discuss their differences. The difference over a hearing date denoted the latest effort by former President Trump’s legal team to delay legal proceedings.

It also underlined the logistical challenges that the legal team of Trump may have as it continues to represent him in two different criminal cases brought by the office of Smith, one in Washington and the other in Florida, where the ex-President is charged with retaining classified papers after leaving the office and hindering the government’s efforts to have the classified papers returned.
