LONDON: UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced on Wednesday his plans to replace the A-level education system with the new Advanced British Standard to develop the “best education system”.

In order to achieve “parity of esteem” between technical and academic courses, Rishi Sunak said that he would combine the A-level education system and technical T-levels into Advanced British Standard.

Teaching unions rejected Sunak’s idea as “pie in the sky” following Downing Street admitted that it might take as many as ten years to execute.

According to the new system, sixth-formers will now be likely to take 5 topics rather than three, the Prime Minister announced, noting that he wanted children to spend 195 hours more with a teacher.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said that the new standard would bring changes that too, with students studying 5 subjects and thanks to the additional teaching time they were going to introduce, the great breadth would not come at the expense of depth which is such a strength of their system.”

However, Sunak’s amendments rapidly drew strong criticism. Sam Freedman, a former Michael Gove advisor at the Department for Education, said the PM was incorrect to intervene.

Paul Whiteman an official of a union for school leaders, said that it showed how “out of touch” the current government was with present issues in the education system, such as matters with hiring and retention as well as deteriorating education infrastructure.
