ISLAMABAD: The National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) of Pakistan has been accredited as an A-status National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) by the UN-affiliated Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), the largest network of national human rights organizations in the world.

GANHRI conducts reviews of national NHRIs to determine whether they are operating in accordance with the UN Principles on National Institutions, commonly known as the Paris Principles.

These principles set the standards that commissions must adhere to in order to be seen as internationally credible and to function effectively.” When a commission demonstrates that it adheres to the Paris Principles, it can apply for accreditation and become part of a global network known as GANHRI.”

Although it is very rare for commissions to achieve A status in the first round, Pakistan’s NCHR was accredited with this highest grade at the first attempt. It is also the only country to achieve the new A status at this year’s meeting.

This status gives the NCHR a seat on the Human Rights Council and other UN bodies – a historic first for Pakistan. In the past, the Pakistan Commission could only act as an observer, but now it will have a voice at the table. NCHR Pakistan joins the ranks of UK, Sweden, Denmark, France and others as NHRIs with A status, said a press release issued here on Saturday. NCHR Chairperson, Rabiya Javeri Agha said NCHR is proud to be accredited as an A-status institution. —APP
