ISLAMABAD: Afghan climber Ali Akbar Sakhi’s body was retrieved from K2 world’s second-highest peak from 7000 meters and lowered down to Base Camp at 5000 metres in a daring operation taking six days.
Ali Akbar, 34, was attempting to be the first Afghan climber in 2022 for scaling K2.
His death raised many queries but the daredevil evacuation of the deceased, by Pakistan climbers and army resulted in a success and his body was lowered down and later airlifted to Combined Military Hospital in Skardu.
This attempt is the first of a kind when a team of climbers along with backup of army aviation lowered the deceased to be airlifted from the base camp at 5000 metres.
Abid Sadpara led the team of five climbers comprising Sadiq Sadpara, Ali Musa, Murad Ali Shagri, Abidin Shagri and Arif Sadpara formed the team.
Abid Sadpara team leader stated that the Afghan mountaineer’s body had been handed over to the heirs.
The Afghan climber suffered a cardiac arrest in June last year while attempting the peak which resulted in his demise.
