KABUL: Afghan farmers have harvested over 72,000 tons of cotton during the past year, the Ministry for Agriculture and Livestock said on Monday.

It said in a statement that Afghanistan procured 72,493 tons of cotton from 54,869 hectares in the previous year.

Last year, 1401 in the Persian calendar ended on 20 March 2023, and the year 1402 started on 21 March 2023.

The statement added that Takhar, Kunduz, Baghlan, Balkh, eastern Nangarhar, western Herat, and Nimroz provinces considerably contributed to producing cotton.

Since poppy cultivation was prohibited in April 2022, Afghan farmers have started replacing illicit crops with saffron, rice, cotton, wheat and other legal plants.

Afghan caretaker government has encouraged farmers to grow valuable crops in the war-ravaged country.
