ISLAMABAD: The Daesh militant group has claimed responsibility for a suicide attack that killed the governor of Afghanistan’s northern Balkh province and 2 other people at his office, media reported on Friday.

The Daesh-linked regional militant group—known as the Islamic State in Khorasan Province has increased its attacks in Afghanistan since the Taliban takeover in August 2021. Targets have included Taliban patrols as well as members of the country’s Shiite minority.

Local police spokesman Mohammad Asif Waziri said that Thursday’s attack in Mazar-e-Sharif killed 3 people, including governor Daud Muzmal, and injured 4 others.
