SYDNEY, Australia: The Institute of Economics and Peace’s latest report reveals a significant shift in global terrorism trends. Afghanistan, which had held the top position for terrorism impact since 2019, has fallen to sixth place.

The report highlights an 81 percent drop in terrorism-related deaths in Afghanistan in 2023, with the country witnessing 119 such deaths last year.

This decline marks a notable decrease of 71 percent in terrorist incidents, making 2023 the least violent year in Afghanistan in two decades.

The report attributes the drop in terrorism-related deaths to the changes following the Taliban’s takeover.

However, the Khorasan branch of Daesh is noted as the most active terrorist group in the region, responsible for 73 deaths in 2023. The new focus of terrorism impact now includes Burkina Faso, Israel, Mali, Pakistan, and Syria.
