ISLAMABAD: Vice Chancellor Allama Iqbal Open University Prof. Dr. Nasir Mahmood said that AIOU (Allama Iqbal Open University) had become the first priority for women living in the far-flung areas of the country, especially girls who have given up on education due to economic and social constraints.

Sharing his views during a discussion with media persons, he said that out of 1.2 million registered students at AIOU, more than 51% are female students.

The Vice-Chancellor said that the university was playing an exemplary role in pushing the literacy rate of the country; for this purpose, the university provides free matriculation education in Gilgit-Baltistan, merged districts (Ex-FATA) and Balochistan.

AIOU provides Education to All

Dr Nisar said that the university also provides free education to disabled persons, jail inmates, and transgender people, as education is a basic need and right of everyone.

He further said that AIOU also provided scholarships and fee concessions to poor and deserving students throughout, particularly those who did not afford to get an education due to financial problems.

He said that books on matriculation, FA, and BA were being dispatched as per the previous procedure, while the books of all other programs were available on the website (www.aiou.edu.pk).

He informed that students of areas without internet facilities could avail of the free internet facility at the nearest regional offices of the university to upload assignments, attend workshops, and access online classes.
