KARACHI: Pakistan Airport Authority (PAA) on Friday called for emergency and adopting precautionary measures to ensure safe flight operations at Karachi’s Jinnah international Airport in response to the expected torrential rains.

The airport authorities stressed for immediate drainage of accumulated rain water on taxiways and apron to prevent aircraft from slipping.

The authorities have been moving the lightweight fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircrafts to safe areas, and additional weight has been added to smaller aircrafts to avert any damage.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning of torrential rains in the coastal areas of Sindh over the next 24 hours.

The NDMA asked the fishermen to avoid going into the open sea for the next 48 hours because of the severe weather conditions.

Rainfall is expected in several areas, including Tharparkar, Badin, Thatta, Sajawal, and Hyderabad. The forecast also predicts rain in Dadu, Jamshoro, Matiari, Mirpur Khas, Sanghar, Shahid Benazirabad, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Ullah Yar and Umarkot.

Karachi Division is expected to witness intermittent stormy rain until August 31. There is also a concern about potential flood situations in urban areas and canals in Balochistan because of the heavy rains.
