RIYADH: Historical mosques and sites abound in Madinah. Among these historical sites is Al-Ghamamah Mosque, where, according to the Saudi Press Agency, the holy Prophet Muhammad Peace be upon him (SAWW) is said to have offered Eid prayers and the funeral prayer in absentia for the Negus of Ethiopia when he learned of his demise.

Al-Ghamamah Mosque is situated approximately 500 meters southwest of the Bab Al-Salam gate of the Prophet’s Mosque. It was the first mosque constructed by Caliph Umar bin Abdulaziz during his reign in Madinah.

The mosque has an outstanding architectural design with white domes, black basalt stones, and intricately carved wooden doors on the outside.

A minaret is located on the northwest corner. The mosque’s plaza, adorned with trees and greenery, offers a serene atmosphere for visitors. Inside, there is a mihrab located on the southern wall, with a marble pulpit to its right.

Over the years, Al-Ghamamah Mosque has undergone several restorations, with significant renovations carried out under the current Saudi government. This commitment to preservation has ensured that the mosque remains a vibrant hub for religious and cultural activities, maintaining its strong connection to the holy Prophet’s legacy.
