MELBOURNE: Surviving a tense encounter at the Australian Open on Thursday, Alexander Zverev, seeded sixth, overcame a significant challenge by defeating Slovakian qualifier Lukas Klein 7-5 3-6 4-6 7-6(5) 7-6(7) to advance to the third round.
With rain forcing the match to be played under the roof on John Cain Arena, Zverev faced adversity after losing the opening set, but he managed to claw back, ultimately securing victory in a nail-biting tie-break.
Klein, ranked 163rd in the world, had a chance to break at 4-4 in the fourth set but couldn’t capitalize, allowing Zverev to level the match and eventually emerge victorious in the closely contested battle.
