ISLAMABAD: Iman Hazir Mazari, the counsel for the 24-year-old girl, who was allegedly raped in Islamabad’s F-9 Park on February 2, said on Friday that the police had arrested the two suspects involved in the incident on February 15, but they were killed in a fake police encounter.
Addressing a press conference with human rights activist Farzana Bari in Islamabad, Mazari said that the police later tweeted from their official account that they have zeroed in on the suspects.
“The rape victim was called to the police station to ascertain the suspects’ identity and she had also identified them,” she said.
Suspects killed in fake police encounter
Mazari said she kept trying to talk to the SSP about the case, but he was unavailable. She said the suspects were killed in a fake police encounter Thursday night before the trial.
During the trial, she said the accused could have spilled the beans about their involvement in other crimes.
Earlier on Friday, the capital police issued an FIR concerning the encounter and killing of the two suspects at a police checkpoint in Sector D-12. Police had registered a case on the complaint of a police officer after the two suspects were killed in an alleged police encounter in Sector D-12.
According to the FIR, four suspects on two motorcycles were signalled to stop by the police personnel at the checkpoint in D-12.
“The riders on two motorcycles tried to escape. They also fired at the police with Kalashnikovs and pistols. No police personnel were injured due to the security measures they had taken. The two suspects, who fell from the motorcycle, came under fire from their accomplices and sustained injuries. The suspects on another motorcycle fled while firing at the police,” the FIR said, adding that the police personnel rushed the two injured suspects to the PIMS Hospital, where they succumbed to injuries. According to the police, two pistols and ammunition were recovered from the injured suspects. The incident occurred at 1.45 am on New Margalla Road in Shah Allah Ditta.
Later, Islamabad police said that the two armed motorcycle riders opened fire on the police personnel manning the checkpoint in Sector D-12. The police also retaliated, and both motorcyclists were injured. The injured suspects were taken to the hospital but could not recover.
A second statement from the Islamabad police said the victim had identified the slain suspects. According to the police, the two suspects were involved in the rape of the girl in F-9 Park.
According to the police, both suspects were wanted in heinous crimes, including street crimes.
According to the police, one of the suspects was also a proclaimed offender in a murder case during a robbery.
On Wednesday night, the police also released CCTV footage of the suspects involved in the rape case. It was said that the suspects had been tracked through safe city cameras. In the footage, the suspects could be seen riding a motorcycle and passing through the gate of F-9 Park.
According to the police, the suspects were armed when they allegedly raped the girl. Police earlier said that raids were being conducted to arrest the suspects.
On February 2, the girl was allegedly gang-raped in Islamabad’s F-9 Park. Margalla police said earlier that the victim had gone to the park for a walk with her friend. In her statement to the police, the victim said, “She was threatened and raped by two armed men in F-9 Park. According to the FIR, their clothes were thrown away after being raped.
