WASHINGTON: The US has raised the alert level of various military bases in Europe to its second-highest level, American media reported.

According to CNN and ABC News the US bases, located across Europe, were raised to the “Charlie” alert level. The US army says on its website that level is ordered when intelligence is received showing some form of terrorist action or targeting against security personnel is likely.

It added that the highest level known as “Delta” is applied when a terrorist strike occurred or one is “approaching.”

AFP reported that the US European Command (USEUCOM) did not confirm the status change but said “we remain vigilant.”

Meanwhile, the Pentagon said that due to various factors potentially impacting the security and safety of US personnel and their families stationed in the European theater, USEUCOM is intensifying its efforts to stress vigilance during this summer.

Similarly, the US State Department advises US citizens in Germany, where the USEUCOM is headquartered, to show increased caution due to threat of terrorism.

However, no specific threat has been mentioned, European citizens have been on heightened alert since gunmen killed about 150 people outside Moscow in March, an attack claimed by the Daesh. The development comes as Germany is hosting an international football event while France has increased its state of alert ahead of the Paris Olympics.
