Angelina Jolie Quits UN Refugee Agency

GENEVA: The United Nations (UN) said on Friday that Hollywood star Angelina Jolie is going to quit her role as a Special Envoy for the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) but will work as a humanitarian activist.

Angelina Jolie did more than 60 field assignments with the UN during her 21 years of association with the UN refugee agency.  In a statement, Angelina Jolie said that she will continue to do everything to help refugees and displaced people.

She said that she wants to work directly with refugees and local organizations following 20-year working within the U.N.

UN lauds Angelina Jolie’s contributions

This year, Angelina Jolie visited Ukraine and Yemen to meet with the affected people. She also visited Pakistan after the recent floods in the South Asian country. 

Chief of UNHCR Filippo Grandi thanked Angelina for her commitment, service, and the difference the star has made for refugees.

Filippo Grandi appreciated her desire to shift her role and said that she will serve the refugee cause worldwide.  UNHCR estimates that as many as 100 million people are presently displaced worldwide.
