London: Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has opened up about her role as iconic opera singer Maria Callas in the highly anticipated biopic Maria, sharing the challenges and personal growth she experienced while portraying the legendary soprano.
Speaking at the London Film Festival gala screening of the film at the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, Jolie reflected on the artistic and emotional demands of the role.
In an interview with the Irish Independent, the Maleficent actress expressed admiration for the art form, calling it “such a beautiful art form,” but admitted that stepping into the shoes of Callas was both thrilling and daunting.
“As much as it was terrifying, I felt like it was impossible to do and I hadn’t really sung,” she said.
Jolie credited Maria director Pablo Larraín for helping her navigate the challenging role. “I had a wonderful director who supported me and made me feel safe and believed in me,” she said.
The actress also highlighted the collaborative spirit of the cast and crew, saying, “And wonderful actors and other actors to work with.”
She further expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn new skills during the filming process, noting, “It’s quite a gift to have lessons and be at a time in your life when you get to learn a new skill.”
Jolie shared her deep connection to the role and her admiration for Callas, saying, “I got to be this extraordinary human being and be in her shoes. I love her.”
