ANKARA: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told visiting Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas on Wednesday that Ankara will continue to support the Palestinian cause and push the world to increase pressure on Israel, his office stated.

President Mahmud Abbas and Erdogan exchanged views on recent developments as well as the measures to be taken for a long-term truce and peace in the Gaza Strip, according to Erdogan’s office.

The Turkish President strongly denounced Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip, the statement added, alleging some Western nations for supporting Israel. He expressed deep concern over the current situation and position of some western countries over Israel’s war in Gaza.

President Erdogan told Abbas that all nations, especially in the Muslim countries, must step up efforts to ensure an immediate truce in the Gaza Strip and the continuous delivery of humanitarian help to Gazans.

Mahmud Abbas is set to address an extraordinary session of Turkey’s parliament on Thursday. Israel’s attack on Gaza started after Hamas attacked Israel on October, 7.  Ankara has strongly denounced the war and has halted all trade activities with Israel. It had submitted a request to join South Africa’s case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) alleging Israel of genocide.

Turkey’s invitation to President Abbas came following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the US Congress on July 25, which Turkey has strongly denounced.
