ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Caretaker Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Murtaza Solangi, has maintained that it was not the mandate or responsibility of the caretaker government to set the date for the general election in the country.

Speaking to a private television channel, Solangi highlighted that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) was an autonomous constitutional institution, and since assuming office, he has maintained constant communication with the ECP.

Solangi expressed full confidence in the capability and leadership of the ECP, underlining that the elections would be held on the date announced by the Election Commission. He clarified that the responsibility of deciding the election date rested solely with the ECP, reiterating the caretaker government’s commitment to upholding the democratic process.

When asked about the Pakistan People’s Party, one of the major political parties in the country, Solangi noted that during the election period, all parties and their leadership had the freedom to express their stance on important issues within the democratic environment. He emphasized that Pakistan’s media enjoyed freedom, and all registered political parties were provided equal opportunities to convey their messages to the public.

Solangi addressed concerns about privatization, stating that the process was initiated by the previous elected government and the caretaker government was bound to implement those decisions. He stressed the need for institutional reforms and expressed his principled stance against privatizing public broadcasters, emphasizing that these institutions were essential services supported by the state worldwide.

Government to Ensure Security of Pakistan

Regarding the deportation of illegal immigrants, Solangi stated that those residing illegally in Pakistan should voluntarily leave the country by October 31. After this deadline, illegal foreigners would be deported from the country to defend the state and its citizens while securing national borders. He reiterated that Pakistan was committed to deporting illegal immigrants and would no longer allow individuals to cross the border and reside in the country without proper documentation.

Solangi also clarified that the return of Nawaz Sharif, the leader of one of Pakistan’s largest political parties, had nothing to do with the caretaker government. He affirmed that upon Nawaz Sharif’s return, the law would take its course, and the Constitution of Pakistan would be upheld.

Regarding the PTI election campaign, Solangi stated that the internal matters of the party, including who would run their election campaign, were not the concern of the caretaker government. He emphasized that political parties historically conducted their election campaigns even in challenging circumstances, and there were no restrictions on PTI in that regard.
