Anti-Austerity March: Ten Arrested, Several Hurt in Argentina

BUENOS AIRES: The police on Wednesday apprehended ten people during an anti-austerity protest in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina.

Hundreds of demonstrators angry about cuts on social spending threw stones at police, who used pepper spray water cannons and rubber bullets.

Jorge Macri, head of government for the city of Buenos Aires confirmed the arrest of 10 people adding that eight policemen were also injured.

He regretted that two journalists also got injured.

46-year-old Martin Velazquez, who works at a food bank, told the media that they were protesting against the shortage of food and police treated them with sticks and bullets.

Government support to soup kitchens was halted in December, after self-declared anarcho-capitalist President Javier Milei assumed the office.

His government has also cut transport and energy subsidies. According to the reports wage earners have lost a fifth of their purchasing power due to annual inflation exceeding 270 percent.

According to figures from the Pontifical Catholic University’s Social Debt Observatory, almost six out of 10 Argentines are living in poverty.

Street demonstrations are being held in the capital on almost daily basis as four months have been passed into Milei’s government.
