ISLAMABAD:  Apple has fired around 50 employees including many Indians for donation scam by misusing charity clauses, according to Western and Indian media reports.

As per media reports, the firm has terminated about 50 employees from its Cupertino headquarters following uncovering a sophisticated fraud involving the misuse of its Matching Grants programme to inflate their compensation.

Exploiting Charity Donations

Media reports suggest that a significant number of those who have been fired are Indian employees allegedly exploiting Telugu charity organisations in the United States as part of the scheme.

According to media reports, authorities in the United States have named and issued warrants against six individuals in connection with the scam.

Media reports cited the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office as saying that the fraud resulted in the misappropriation of funds.

In December 2024, the US also charged six former employees of Apple Inc. for defrauding the firm by exploiting its charity programme.

Matching Gifts Programme

The Apple Matching Gifts Programme encourages charitable giving by matching employees’ donations or volunteer hours with equivalent contributions from Apple. Full-time and part-time employees can participate, with the programme supporting various causes, including education, healthcare, and disaster relief.
