Apple Launches iOS 18: New Features, Eligible Devices, and Updates

LONDON: Apple has launched iOS 18, marking the latest update to its operating system. The update, which was first unveiled at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, is now available for download.

The new iOS 18 will come preloaded on the newly announced iPhone 16 series and is accessible for a wide range of older models starting today.

How to Download iOS 18

To update your iPhone to iOS 18, follow these simple steps:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Navigate to General.
  3. Tap on Software Update.
  4. If iOS 18 is available for your device, tap Download and Install. You may need to enter your passcode to proceed.
  5. The download will continue in the background, and your device will notify you once the installation is complete.

Eligible Devices for iOS 18

iOS 18 will be compatible with over 25 iPhone models, including:

  • iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation)
  • iPhone 11 series and later
  • iPhone 12 series and later
  • iPhone 13 series and later
  • iPhone 14 series and later
  • iPhone 15 series (preloaded)

Certain advanced features, such as Apple Intelligence, will be exclusive to the iPhone 15 and newer models.

New Features in iOS 18

Home Screen: iOS 18 introduces enhanced flexibility for app and widget arrangement on the Home Screen. Users can now customize color themes and app icons, particularly for dark mode.

Control Center: The redesigned Control Center offers a streamlined interface with new controls accessible via a swipe-up gesture. Users can also customize control tiles and access settings directly from the lock screen using the Action Button.

Photos App: The Photos app has been upgraded with advanced smart features designed to help users curate collections and manage their photo library more efficiently. New organizational tools and editing capabilities enhance the user experience.

Siri: Siri now supports gesture-based interactions, allowing for more intuitive and hands-free functionality. Users can perform tasks and request information using simple gestures, improving accessibility and ease of use.

Game Mode: iOS 18 introduces a new Game Mode that optimizes device performance based on the specific requirements of different games, providing a smoother and more immersive gaming experience.

Mail App: The Mail app has been updated to include on-device email categorization. Emails are automatically organized into primary, transactional, update, and promotion groups, making it easier for users to manage their inboxes.

Apple Intelligence: A beta release of Apple Intelligence features will be included in a forthcoming update expected next month. This new functionality aims to enhance device intelligence and personalization based on user behavior and preferences.
