TOKYO: Apple plans to transition all upcoming iPhone models to organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays from 2025, phasing out liquid crystal displays (LCDs) entirely), Japan’s Nikkei newspaper reported on Tuesday, citing unnamed sources. This shift reflects a broader industry trend favoring OLED technology for its superior color accuracy and contrast.

Nikkei reported that Apple has begun placing significant orders for OLED displays from suppliers including China’s BOE Technology and South Korea’s LG Display. This move signifies a major shift in Apple’s display strategy, aligning all future iPhones with the high-definition capabilities of OLED technology.

Currently, Apple utilizes OLED panels in its premium iPhone models, such as the iPhone X, which was the first to feature OLED screens when it launched in 2017. The company has continued this trend with its latest high-end devices and extended the use of OLED displays to its new iPad Pro models introduced in May.

Historically, Sharp and Japan Display were major suppliers of LCD panels for iPhones, holding a combined 70% market share a decade ago. However, these companies have since focused on LCD technology and have not transitioned to mass-producing OLED screens.

Recently, Sharp and Japan Display have supplied only LCD panels for the iPhone SE model, while OLED technology has been reserved for more premium offerings.

OLED displays are renowned for their ability to deliver more vivid colors, deeper blacks, and improved contrast ratios compared to LCDs, making them particularly well-suited for high-definition content and immersive user experiences.
