WASHINGTON: In a move sparking controversy and outrage among iPhone and iPad users, tech giant Apple is receiving criticism for its decision to implement transaction fees, posing a potential increase in costs for app enthusiasts.

This development follows a recent American court order instructing Apple to revise its rules related to the well-known ‘Apple tax’—a substantial 30 percent charge on subscriptions and in-app purchases. While the court mandated that Apple permits app developers to offer alternative payment methods outside its ecosystem, newly revealed court documents expose Apple’s efforts to safeguard its revenue stream.

Apple’s New Fees

Under the new policy, a 27 percent commission is introduced on purchases, raising concerns about potential additional expenses for subscriptions to popular apps like Audible and X. Although the impact of this change is currently confined to App Store users in the United States, there are growing fears that a similar fee structure may be introduced in the United Kingdom as well.
