LONDON: Arab foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan have expressed support for the temporary truce agreement between Israel and Hamas. However, they emphasized that the four-day ceasefire should be extended and serve as a foundational step toward a comprehensive cessation of hostilities.

Speaking at a media briefing in London, the foreign ministers welcomed the agreement, which includes the release of hostages and the increase of aid deliveries into the besieged Gaza Strip. They urged that the truce should pave the way for renewed discussions aimed at a two-state solution.

The temporary ceasefire, negotiated on Wednesday, entails a pause in hostilities to facilitate the release of 50 hostages held in Gaza in exchange for 150 Palestinians imprisoned in Israel. Additionally, the agreement allows for the entry of much-needed humanitarian aid into Gaza.

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan underscored the importance of sustaining and expanding humanitarian aid without linking it to hostage releases. He asserted, “Whatever humanitarian access now increases as a result of this hostage deal must remain in place and must be built upon,” emphasizing that punishing the civilian population of Gaza is unacceptable.

The conflict, initiated on October 7, when Israel launched a major military operation, resulting in widespread devastation and casualties in Gaza. The total death toll, including civilians, has been staggering, with over 14,000 Palestinians reportedly killed.

Arab Foreign Ministers’ Diplomatic Mission for Peace

The Arab foreign ministers, part of a contact group comprised mainly of Muslim nations, are actively engaging with Israel’s major allies and the UN Security Council. Their goal is to bring about an end to the Gaza war and work towards a lasting solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

The delegation, currently on an international tour, landed in London after visits to China and Russia, marking a diplomatic effort to garner support for their initiative and contribute to the resolution of the protracted and devastating conflict in the Middle East.
