YEREVAN: In a significant development, Armenia and Azerbaijan have successfully reached agreement on the basic principles for a peace treaty, as announced by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Saturday, according to Russia’s TASS news agency.
The longstanding dispute between the two countries, notably centered around the breakaway Azerbaijani region of Nagorno-Karabakh, has persisted for decades. The tensions escalated when Baku’s forces reclaimed control of Nagorno-Karabakh in September, triggering a mass exodus of ethnic Armenians from the region.
Potential Peace Treaty Between Armenia and Azerbaijan
Despite the historical animosities, Pashinyan conveyed that progress had been made in discussions pertaining to a peace treaty. However, he noted that both countries still encountered challenges in reaching agreements on certain aspects.
The breakthrough in negotiations signals a potential shift towards a more constructive dialogue between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
