MIAN CHUNNO: Arshad Nadeem, Pakistan’s javelin sensation, made history by winning the country’s first Olympic gold medal in 40 years at the Paris Olympics. With a remarkable 92.97-meter throw, he not only secured the top spot but also set a new Olympic record, marking a significant achievement for Pakistani athletics.

Returning to a hero’s welcome, Arshad was greeted with immense pride and joy at Lahore airport and his hometown, Mian Channu. The 27-year-old athlete, now hailed as a national hero, is set to receive Rs153 million in cash prizes and will be conferred with the prestigious Hilal-i-Imtiaz award for his outstanding performance.

In an interview with Arshad expressed his hopes for continued success in future Olympics, particularly the 2028 Games in Los Angeles and beyond. He emphasized his commitment to staying fit and healthy to bring more medals to Pakistan, reflecting on the long journey that led to his historic win in Paris.

Arshad’s journey has been one of perseverance and dedication. He recalled his struggles since becoming the national champion in 2015 and the hard work he put into his performance at the Tokyo Games. Overcoming injuries and undergoing surgery earlier this year, he credited his coaches and doctors, particularly Dr. Ali Sher Bajwa, for their support in his recovery and preparation.

Discussing the Paris Olympics, Arshad shared insights into his mindset during the competition. He revealed that his goal was to qualify with his first throw while avoiding injury, which was crucial given the tough competition he faced from world-class athletes, including his friend and rival, India’s Neeraj Chopra, who settled for silver.

Despite the intense rivalry, Arshad highlighted the camaraderie between him and Neeraj, emphasizing that while they compete for their respective countries, their friendship remains strong. This sportsmanship is a testament to the positive spirit that transcends borders in the world of athletics.

Addressing the support he received from the government, Arshad expressed gratitude, though he acknowledged some challenges along the way. He shared that his journey began in 2012, initially as a cricketer, before being introduced to javelin by Rashid Ahmed Sakhi. Despite some reports of inadequate support, Arshad remained focused on his achievements and the overwhelming reception he received upon returning home.

Arshad’s triumphant return to Mian Channu was marked by celebrations from villagers and fans, who flocked to meet their local hero. Reflecting on this overwhelming support, Arshad expressed his gratitude, noting that he had barely slept due to the continuous stream of visitors eager to congratulate him.

In a touching moment, Arshad shared that the first person he informed of his Olympic success was his mother, underscoring the deep personal significance of his achievement. As Arshad Nadeem looks forward to the future, his story stands as an inspiration, not just for Pakistani athletes, but for the nation as a whole, symbolizing the heights that can be achieved through commitment and hard work.
