HULUNBUIR: The opening match of the Asian Champions Trophy ended in a draw by 2-2 between Pakistan and Malaysia on Sunday at the Moqi Hockey Training Base in Hulunbuir City, Inner Mongolia, China. Despite taking a 2-0 lead, Pakistan was unable to secure a win as Malaysia rallied to level the score.
The match began with both teams failing to find the net in the opening quarter. Pakistan, however, broke the deadlock in the second quarter when Sufyan Khan scored to give the Green Shirts a 1-0 lead. Pakistan extended their advantage in the third quarter with a goal from Nadeem Ahmed, putting them in a commanding 2-0 position.
As the match approached its final stages, Malaysia responded with increased pressure. The first breakthrough for Malaysia came via a penalty corner, followed by a crucial equalizing goal from Aiman Rozemi just five minutes before the end of the match.
Pakistan’s inability to hold onto their lead was a disappointment, particularly given their strong start. Despite the draw, Pakistani player Ammad Butt was recognized for his performance and awarded the Player of the Match accolade, along with a memento and a $200 cheque.
Pakistan will face South Korea on September 9, Japan on September 11, China on September 12, and India on September 14. The tournament, which is in its eighth edition, features six teams competing in a round-robin format. The top four teams will advance to the semifinals, scheduled for September 16, with the third-place playoff and final set for September 17.
