LAHORE: The Independent Group, famously known as Asma Jahangir Group, on Tuesday won the annual election of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) for the year 2024-25 by 350 votes against the Professional Group, according to unofficial results.
Rauf Atta from the Asma Jahangir Group (AJG) was elected to the top spot by a narrow margin. Atta won with 350 votes, narrowly defeating his opponent from the Hamid Khan Group (HKG), Munir Kakar, who received 331 votes.
Out of 769 registered voters, a significant turnout was noted, with 682 Supreme Court lawyers casting their ballots at the principal seat for the annual elections.
In Lahore, Atta achieved 558 votes, outpacing Kakar, who garnered 484 votes. Early reports from Multan indicated that Atta received 125 votes, surpassing Kakar’s 85 by a margin of 40.
In Islamabad, of the 682 registered lawyers who voted, Atta led with 190 votes while Kakar followed with 160.
Atta’s influence extended into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where he won by narrow margins across various cities. In Peshawar, he secured 127 votes compared to Kakar’s 123. In Bannu, Atta received 21 votes to Kakar’s 10, and in Dera Ismail Khan, he led with 25 votes against Kakar’s 11.
Other close victories included wins by 7 votes in Abbottabad, 11 in Bannu, 14 in Dera Ismail Khan, 8 in Swat, and 4 in Peshawar. In Hyderabad, Atta claimed 50 votes, exceeding Kakar’s 34.
