ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Federal Minister for Information, Broadcasting, and Parliamentary Affairs, Murtaza Solangi, emphasized that all speculations and rumors surrounding the upcoming general elections have been dispelled.
Speaking at an event organized by the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE), he confirmed that the elections are scheduled for Thursday, February 8, 2024, and citizens will exercise their voting rights.
Minister Solangi underscored the caretaker government’s responsibility to support the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in ensuring smooth elections and adhering to democratic principles. In a parliamentary democracy, he asserted that elected representatives hold the legitimate mandate to govern as per the constitutional framework.
Addressing the media, Solangi urged responsible reporting on the elections, emphasizing the heightened role of the media in the electoral process. He stressed the importance of political manifestoes focusing on critical issues such as the economy, foreign policy, education, and health.
The minister highlighted the necessity of discussions on fundamental issues and the need to enhance public awareness of national concerns. Drawing attention to challenges like population growth, Solangi advocated for effective measures to control it.
Regarding the 18th Amendment, which empowers provinces, he acknowledged the significance of promoting democratic values within political parties. Expressing hope for resolving the country’s real problems, Minister Murtaza Solangi anticipated that the political parties coming into power after the February elections would fulfill their commitments to the electorate. —APP
