WASHINGTON: Amazon introduced a robot named Astro during its September 2021 hardware event, predicting that within five to ten years, every home would have a robot. Now, the company unveiled a new version of Astro designed to function as an automated security guard for businesses.

Initially, Amazon described Astro as a “new kind of household robot that integrates Alexa, advanced hardware, software, computer vision, and AI.” It even gave Astro a “unique persona,” featuring sounds, eyes on the display, and wheels for mobility. Astro is reminiscent of WALL-E, but it’s essentially a Fire tablet on wheels, running on Fire OS and Linux.

The new Astro for Business transforms the existing Astro robot into an autonomous security robot that offers intelligent alerts, custom patrol routes, and scheduled patrols. It functions similarly to a human security guard but without the hourly pay and potential for human error. Astro can check on a business after hours or patrol and send alerts if something is wrong, potentially saving costs over time.

Astro for Business can map up to 5,000 square feet, which should meet the needs of most small businesses. While it may not cover large warehouses or factories, it provides a solid starting point. Future expansions could increase its range.

Other notable features include a live view and two-way communication with people near Astro. It has an HD periscope camera with night vision and visual ID, enabling it to send smart alerts for unrecognized persons. This allows it to differentiate between employees working after hours and intruders. Currently, the subscription-based virtual security guard service is available only in the US.
