TRIPOLI: At least 10 persons were killed in a deadly attack in Libya’s capital. The United Nations mission in the country has called for a comprehensive investigation into the incident, AFP reported.

According to local reports, the tragedy took place on Saturday within a villa located in Tripoli’s Abu Salim district, with some media outlets suggesting that the death toll may exceed a dozen. However, no clear attributions have been made regarding the perpetrators of the attack.

Significantly, the incident coincided with the 13th anniversary of the uprising that marked the end of Moamer Kadhafi’s decades-long rule, ushering Libya into a tumultuous era of conflict and instability.

The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has strongly condemned the violence, emphasizing the need for swift and thorough investigations. The mission underscored the ongoing monitoring of the situation and stressed the imperative of preventing any escalation of hostilities.

Abu Salim, where the attack occurred, falls under the control of Abdel Ghani al-Kikli, who heads the Stability Support Authority (SSA), established in January 2021. The SSA confirmed the loss of two of its members in the assault.

UNSMIL’s statement echoed concerns previously voiced by its leader, Abdoulaye Bathily, regarding the perilous dynamics between rival security factions, which pose a grave threat to Tripoli’s fragile security landscape.

In response to the incident, Libyan authorities have announced the initiation of a criminal investigation, underscoring their commitment to pursuing justice and maintaining stability in the region.
