DUBAI, United Arab Emirates: Iran State TV reported on Friday that individuals believed to be part of a separatist organization carried out a nighttime assault on a police station in southeastern Iran, resulting in the deaths of 11 individuals and causing injuries to several others.

Ali Reza Marhemati, the deputy governor of Sistan province, reported that senior police officers and soldiers were killed and injured in an assault at 2 a.m. in Rask town, approximately 1,400 kilometers (875 miles) southwest of Tehran. He mentioned that police engaged in a shootout and neutralized several of the assailants.

According to state TV, Jaish al-Adl, a separatist group, was held responsible for the attack. This group had previously claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing in 2019 that resulted in the death of 27 members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard force.

Over recent months, there has been a surge in attacks by militants and small separatist factions in the mainly Sunni region, targeting police stations as part of a subdued insurgency against the government. Sistan and Baluchestan province, known as one of Iran’s less developed areas, has witnessed significant government crackdowns on demonstrations subsequent to nationwide protests over the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who died in police custody in Tehran after being detained for allegedly violating Islamic dress code regulations.
