ISLAMABAD: Former Prime Minister of Pakistan and Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, Imran Khan, has purportedly reached out to a US Congresswoman seeking assistance in the face of an ongoing crackdown on his party and its members.

In an alleged audio leak featuring Khan and US Congresswoman Maxine Moore Waters, the former can be heard requesting her support in addressing “human rights violations” taking place in Pakistan.

The leaked audio, which emerged on social media, captures a conversation believed to be between Khan and Congresswoman Waters. In the 1.57-minute clip, Khan reportedly informs the American lawmaker about his removal from power and the subsequent crackdown on PTI members.

He alleges that his government was toppled by the military establishment in collaboration with the current ruling authorities, citing the powerful influence of the military in the country.

Imran Khan claims PTI currently facing severe crackdown

Khan claims that his party is currently facing the severe crackdown in the history of democratic parties in Pakistan. Describing the situation as critical, he appeals to Congresswoman Waters to issue a statement in support of his party.

Khan emphasizes the importance of her voice, stating that it would have a crucial impact in highlighting the crackdown and advocating for the rule of law, the constitution, and fundamental rights.

The leaked audio comes against the backdrop of an ongoing crackdown on PTI workers and leaders following violent protests that erupted after Imran Khan’s arrest on May 9 in a graft case.

The protests allegedly led to the ransacking and torching of public and military installations across the country. Authorities have arrested thousands of PTI workers and leaders in connection with the incidents.

The violent protests resulted in the loss of lives, injuries, and extensive damage. The military and civil leadership of the country condemned the unrest, describing it as a “black chapter” in Pakistan’s history. They vowed to try the rioters under the Army Act and other relevant laws.

Imran Khan has distanced his party from the attacks on defense and government buildings, demanding an independent judicial commission to investigate the vandalism.

It is important to note that the authenticity of the leaked audio and the involvement of Congresswoman Maxine Moore Waters have not been independently verified at this time.
